Protecting memorabilia, instruments, furniture and equipment during overhead ceiling work
NEED A SMOOTH CEILING?

What the project needed

The furnished collector's room contained sports memorabilia, a massage chair, a drum kit and other equipment that had to remain protected while dusty ceiling work was completed overhead.

We treated protection as part of the renovation, contained the work area, used HEPA extraction during dust-producing stages and coordinated the surface repair with the new lighting.

Scope of work

  • Plan containment and protection around the room's contents.
  • Remove the existing popcorn texture using dust-controlled methods.
  • Prepare, skim coat and sand the exposed ceiling.
  • Prime and paint the repaired surface.
  • Replace the track lighting with recessed pot lights.

The process

Why the work required expertise

Protection comes before removal

We planned containment and surface protection around everything that remained in the room before starting the dust-producing stages. HEPA extraction helped manage dust at the source while the work zone was separated and cleaned methodically.

No renovation like this is literally dust-free. The goal is a practical, thorough protection plan that matches the conditions in the home. This occupied-room coordination is also part of coordinated interior renovation planning.

From texture removal to a finished surface

Removing the popcorn texture exposed a surface that still needed preparation. We skim coated and sanded the ceiling, then primed and painted it to create a consistent finish. Learn more about popcorn ceiling removal and smooth-ceiling finishing and interior painting and ceiling finishing.

Coordinating the ceiling and lighting

The existing track lights were replaced with recessed pot lights. Completing the lighting and ceiling repair together allowed the new fixtures and smooth surface to read as one renovation and avoided repeating disruptive overhead work.

Planning answers

What homeowners can learn from this project

Can popcorn ceiling removal be completed in a furnished room?

It can sometimes be completed with a detailed protection and containment plan, but the room conditions must be reviewed and some items may still need to be moved.

Why is skim coating needed after the texture is removed?

Removing texture exposes the substrate; repairs, skim coating and controlled sanding are what create a consistent surface for primer and paint.

Can pot lights be coordinated with popcorn ceiling removal?

Yes. Planning the lighting before final ceiling finishing avoids reopening completed work and allows the fixtures and smooth ceiling to be finished as one project.
