Bathroom renovations for real homes

Waterproofing before tile

Tile and grout are finishes, not waterproofing. We plan shower membranes, corners, seams, niches, benches, curbs, transitions, and drains before the first tile is installed.

Layout that works daily

A bathroom has to fit real movement. We check door swing, vanity depth, toilet clearance, shower glass, towel storage, niche placement, lighting, and cleaning access.

Trades in the right order

Bathroom renovations involve demolition, carpentry, plumbing, electrical, waterproofing, tile, glass, trim, paint, fixtures, and cleanup. The order matters.

Clean occupied-home work

We protect finished homes with dust control, floor protection, contained demolition, disposal planning, and cleanup so the project does not spread through the house.

Ventilation and moisture control

Fans, timers, insulation gaps, window areas, waterproof substrates, silicone joints, and paint choice all affect how the bathroom holds up after daily showers.

Clear scope and allowances

A proper quote should separate labour, tile, waterproofing, plumbing, electrical, vanity, counters, glass, fixtures, heated floors, disposal, and exclusions.

Fixture details

What top bathroom pages often leave vague

Waterproofing method

A bathroom page should say how showers, niches, benches, curbs, and floors are protected. We plan membrane details before tile goes in.

Condo logistics

Condo bathrooms may need board approval, elevator bookings, noise windows, plumbing stack coordination, insurance paperwork, and controlled disposal.

Subfloor and wall condition

Old bathrooms often hide water damage, uneven framing, weak subfloors, poor ventilation, and out-of-square walls. The estimate should explain how hidden issues are handled.

Electrical and ventilation

Bathrooms need GFCI protection, safe lighting, fan capacity, timer controls, heated floor wiring, mirror lighting, and practical switch locations.

Glass and fixture lead times

Shower glass is usually measured after tile. Vanities, valves, faucets, drains, toilets, mirrors, and tile should be confirmed early so the schedule does not stall.

Final finishing

A bathroom is not done when the tile is set. Caulking, trim, paint, mirrors, accessories, glass, fixture testing, grout cleanup, and punch list work decide the final result.

Finished bathroom examples

Spa bathroom with freestanding tub, frameless glass shower, marble-look tile, dark vanity, and bright window.

Bathroom renovation scope options

Cosmetic refresh

Best for paint, mirror, lighting, faucet, toilet, vanity, accessories, silicone, and small tile repairs when the existing layout and waterproofing can stay.

Standard remodel

Best for new vanity, toilet, tub or shower, tile, waterproofing, exhaust fan, fixtures, lighting, and clean finish work without major layout changes.

Full gut renovation

Best when the bathroom needs demolition to framing, new plumbing, new electrical, subfloor repair, waterproofing, tile, glass, vanity, tub, toilet, fixtures, and paint.

Tub-to-shower conversion

Best when a bathtub is rarely used and the household wants easier entry, better glass, a bench, a niche, safer fixtures, or a larger shower feel.

Condo bathroom renovation

Best when work must follow building rules, plumbing stack limits, elevator bookings, noise windows, disposal rules, and board approval requirements.

Accessible bathroom update

Best when planning grab bars, blocking, curbless entries, wider clearances, hand showers, comfort-height toilets, slip-resistant tile, and better lighting.

What our clients say

Popcorn ceilings

WOW! Just WOW! Max removed all the popcorn from our 1800 sq ft town home, repainted from top to bottom plus did some carpentry repairs on our floors…and the final result is spectacular! But just as important, he made the entire renovation painless for us: not only was the process completely dust free and mess free, but Max also moved ALL the furniture and pictures himself (no help from us at all) then put EVERYTHING back together the way it was. We literally walked out of our home before he started and then walked back in a couple of weeks later to a beautiful brand new home with everything in the exact same place as it was beforehand. Renovating doesn’t not get better than this!!!

Popcorn ceilings

The Popcorn removal was excellent and a very clean process. They also transformed our stairs from boring oak to a much more modern look. They handled repainting of the whole house and replacement of old tile floors with a beautiful new one. There were many additional small tasks which they handled very well. They have design skills if you need them. The house looks great. Very talented and reliable people. I should also say they are very professional providing detailed quotations and billing. Popcorn ceilings

This is the second time Max has done some work at our home. The first time was to remove popcorn from our hallway ceilings. We were so very impressed with the results and it was truly dust-free. This time Max removed wallpaper and prepared those walls for painting. He painted several other areas as well and sanded and reapplied urethane on all our new doors. And again it was dust-free! He and Galina are superb craftsmen. Their attention to the smallest of details speaks volumes of the pride they take in their work. A quality that is difficult to find these days. We highly recommend Strataline. Thank you Max and Galina. We will be calling again for the next project. Ilene and Mario, Maple

FAQ

Bathroom renovation FAQ

What bathroom renovation services do you provide?

We handle full bathroom renovations, ensuite renovations, powder rooms, basement bathrooms, condo bathrooms, tub-to-shower conversions, walk-in showers, curbless showers, heated floors, custom vanities, tile, waterproofing, plumbing, electrical, ventilation, lighting, mirrors, glass, fixtures, painting, and cleanup.

How much does a bathroom renovation cost in Toronto and the GTA?

Cost depends on size, demolition, waterproofing, tile format, plumbing changes, electrical work, vanity, counters, fixtures, glass, heated floors, ventilation, and hidden damage. A cosmetic update costs much less than a full gut renovation with custom glass, curbless entry, or layout changes.

How long does a bathroom renovation take?

A straightforward bathroom can take one to three weeks once materials are on site. Larger ensuites, condos, curbless showers, heated floors, custom vanities, special-order tile, glass, or plumbing moves can take longer.

Do I need a permit for a bathroom renovation?

Cosmetic work usually does not need a building permit, but plumbing relocation, structural changes, new drains, new electrical circuits, basement bathrooms, or condo requirements may trigger permits, inspections, or building approval.

Do condo bathroom renovations need board approval?

Often yes. Condo boards may require contractor insurance, WSIB, work hours, elevator booking, disposal rules, plumbing stack limits, acoustic underlay, waterproofing details, and written renovation forms before demolition starts.

What is the most important part of a shower renovation?

Waterproofing. Tile, grout, and silicone are finishes, not waterproofing. A proper shower needs the right backer, membrane, seams, corners, drain connection, curb or entry detail, niche detail, bench detail, and flood testing where appropriate.

Do you use Schluter, Laticrete, or other waterproofing systems?

We can work with recognized waterproofing systems such as Schluter and Laticrete when the scope calls for them. The key is using the system correctly from substrate to seams, corners, drain, niche, curb, and tile setting.

Can you convert a bathtub to a walk-in shower?

Yes. Tub-to-shower conversions are common when a bathtub is rarely used or entry is difficult. We review drain location, valve location, waterproofing, glass, slope, niche, bench, grab-bar blocking, and whether a curbless or low-curb design is practical.

Can you build a curbless or barrier-free shower?

Often, but it depends on floor structure, joist direction, drain location, slope, waterproofing, door clearances, and finished floor height. Curbless showers require more planning than standard shower bases.

What is the difference between a walk-in shower and a curbless shower?

A walk-in shower usually means a larger shower with glass access and no tub. A curbless shower has no raised curb at the entry, so the floor slope and waterproofing must be planned with extra care.

Are heated bathroom floors worth it?

Heated floors are worth considering in primary bathrooms, basement bathrooms, and tiled bathrooms where comfort matters. They need electrical planning, thermostat placement, floor sensor placement, and compatible floor assemblies.

Can you renovate a small bathroom?

Yes. Small bathrooms need careful vanity depth, toilet clearance, shower glass swing, door swing, mirror size, storage, lighting, tile scale, and ventilation. The best small bathrooms feel planned, not crowded.

Can you renovate a basement bathroom?

Yes. Basement bathrooms may involve concrete cutting, drain rough-ins, ejector pumps, venting, waterproofing, framing, insulation, ceiling height, and moisture control. The scope depends on existing plumbing and slab conditions.

Can you make a bathroom more accessible?

Yes. Accessible updates can include blocking for grab bars, curbless or low-curb showers, hand showers, bench seats, comfort-height toilets, wider clearances, slip-resistant tile, better lighting, and easier storage.

What causes bathroom renovation delays?

The usual delays are late tile, custom glass timing, vanity lead times, hidden water damage, plumbing surprises, condo approvals, permit requirements, out-of-square framing, and product decisions made after demolition.

Can you keep the same bathroom layout?

Yes. Keeping the same toilet, shower, tub, and vanity locations usually reduces cost and disruption. A layout change can improve function, but it needs plumbing, electrical, framing, and finish review.

When should I change the bathroom layout?

Change the layout when the current bathroom has poor clearances, wasted space, bad storage, unsafe tub access, awkward shower glass, poor lighting, or a vanity that blocks daily use.

What hidden problems do old bathrooms have?

Old bathrooms can hide rotten subfloors, water-damaged drywall, failed waterproofing, loose tile, mold, undersized fans, ungrounded electrical, poor framing, leaking valves, and uneven floors.

Can you fix water damage during a bathroom renovation?

Yes. We remove damaged material, identify the source where possible, rebuild sound substrates, improve waterproofing, and finish the bathroom so the same failure is less likely to return.

Do you replace bathroom plumbing?

We can coordinate shower valves, drains, supply lines, vanity plumbing, toilet flanges, tub drains, shutoffs, and rough-ins. Plumbing scope should be clear before tile and fixtures are ordered.

Do you upgrade bathroom electrical?

Yes. Bathroom electrical may include GFCI protection, dedicated circuits, heated floor wiring, fan controls, vanity lights, pot lights, LED mirrors, switches, and safe fixture placement.

How important is bathroom ventilation?

Very important. Poor ventilation causes condensation, paint failure, mildew, swelling trim, and odours. We review fan capacity, duct path, timer control, door undercut, and moisture-prone corners.

Can you install a new bathroom exhaust fan?

Yes. Exhaust fans should be sized properly, vented outdoors, and controlled by a switch, timer, or humidity control. Venting into an attic or ceiling cavity is not a proper solution.

What tile is best for a bathroom?

Porcelain is a strong choice for floors and showers because it is durable and low maintenance. Natural stone can be beautiful but needs more sealing and care. Slip resistance matters on wet floors.

Are large-format bathroom tiles harder to install?

Yes. Large-format tile needs flatter walls and floors, careful layout, leveling, proper mortar coverage, and clean cuts. It can look modern, but prep quality becomes more visible.

What grout should I use in a shower?

The right grout depends on tile, joint width, colour, and maintenance expectations. Epoxy and high-performance grouts can resist staining better, but installation and cleanup must be done carefully.

Do shower niches leak?

They can if poorly built. Niches need proper framing, slope, waterproofing, corners, seams, and tile layout. A niche should be planned before waterproofing, not improvised after.

Should I choose a shower bench?

A bench can be useful for comfort, accessibility, and shaving, but it adds waterproofing complexity. It needs slope, solid support, proper membrane work, and practical size.

Can you install frameless shower glass?

Yes. Frameless glass is measured after tile is complete. Wall plumb, curb slope, tile layout, glass height, door swing, hardware finish, and splash control all affect the final result.

When is custom vanity better than standard vanity?

Custom vanity makes sense when the room is narrow, plumbing is awkward, storage needs are specific, or the finish must match the rest of the home. Standard vanities are faster and often less costly.

What countertop works best for a bathroom vanity?

Quartz is common because it is durable, consistent, and easy to clean. Natural stone, porcelain, and solid surface can also work depending on style, budget, and maintenance expectations.

Can you add storage to a bathroom?

Yes. Storage can come from vanity drawers, recessed medicine cabinets, linen towers, niches, shelves, tall cabinets, mirror cabinets, and better use of wall depth.

Should I choose matte black, chrome, nickel, or brass fixtures?

Choose finishes based on the room style, maintenance expectations, water spotting, and matching hardware. Chrome is durable and easy to match; black and brass need more careful product coordination.

Can you renovate a powder room?

Yes. Powder rooms are small but detailed. Wallpaper, feature lighting, vanity choice, mirror scale, wall repair, ventilation, and crisp paint or trim work make a big difference.

Can you renovate while we live in the home?

Yes. We plan floor protection, dust control, disposal, working hours, water shutoffs, temporary access, and daily cleanup for occupied homes. It helps if another bathroom remains usable.

How do I prepare for a bathroom renovation?

Choose fixtures early, clear the bathroom, plan alternate bathing, confirm building rules, protect nearby items, and send photos of the room, plumbing wall, electrical panel, access path, and any damage.

What should a bathroom renovation quote include?

It should include demolition, protection, disposal, framing, waterproofing, tile, plumbing, electrical, ventilation, vanity, counters, glass, fixtures, paint, cleanup, exclusions, allowances, timing, and warranty terms.

Do you provide bathroom renovations across the GTA?

Yes. We renovate bathrooms in Toronto, Vaughan, Woodbridge, Richmond Hill, Markham, North York, Mississauga, Oakville, Burlington, Pickering, Ajax, Whitby, Oshawa, and nearby GTA communities.
