At this Fort Erie home, we corrected the mounting of an existing handrail, added a rail on the opposite wall and fitted aluminum railing to the front steps. The work was part of an occupational therapist’s accessibility project.

Project overview

Interior and exterior support

The interior stairs had a handrail on one side. We restored that rail, added support on the opposite wall and installed a new exterior rail along the front steps.

What we found during disassembly

Correcting the existing attachment

Taking the custom rail apart revealed unsuitable wall anchors. We replaced the attachment before restoring and reinstalling the rail.

Restoring the retained handrail

Restoring the custom handrail

We kept the custom handrail and restored its finish after correcting the mounting. A second rail on the opposite wall gives the user support on either side of the flight.

An exterior rail for the front steps

The front steps were open on one side. We fitted an aluminum rail from the lower approach to the existing porch-level guard.

Shoreline property context

Aluminum for the shoreline setting

The new aluminum railing has a light finish that matches the existing porch rail. It continues down the front steps at the shoreline home.

Finished result

Handrails inside and out

The finished interior retains the restored custom rail, now paired with a rail on the opposite wall. Outside, the new aluminum railing completes the route up the front steps.
