Why homeowners choose staircase refinishing

Stair Refinishing Contractor in Vaughan & Toronto

We provide professional stair refinishing in Vaughan, Toronto, and across the GTA, restoring worn wood staircases with a clean, dust-controlled process. From sanding and stain matching to final finishing, we transform existing stairs without full replacement.

Dust-controlled process for finished homes

We work with containment, protection, and dust extraction so your home stays cleaner and more livable throughout the project. Installed cleanly in finished homes — not like a construction site.

Upgrade the look without rebuilding

If the staircase structure is sound, refinishing gives you a completely updated appearance without the cost and disruption of full replacement.

Stain matched to your floors

We custom match stain to coordinate with existing hardwood, trim, and interior finishes for a result that feels intentional.

High-impact visual upgrade

A refinished staircase changes the first impression of the home and often becomes one of the most noticeable upgrades in the space.

Popcorn ceilings

We initially contacted Max to remove the popcorn finish on our vaulted great room ceiling & to refinish/modernize our curved 'blonde-oak' finished stairway leading downstairs. Not only did he do an impeccable job making the ceiling look brand 'new', and with no detectable dust left anywhere, but he also re-located some potlights & installed new crown moulding that required meticulous precision due to several odd corner angles that other contactors insisted couldn't be done. It looked so good we ended up having our main hallway, front foyer, & sunroom ceilings re-done as well. The stairway & railing were re-finished in a darker oak stain that matched our dark hardwood flooring & the new modern metal spindles, and new trimwork have made it look better than ever & despite the hours of sanding off the old finish, there was no dust...!! In the end, we also had his team re-paint all of the above areas, which turned out perfectly as well... Our level of confidence with Max's professionalism & skilled expertise, not to mention being easy to deal with, is such that we would recommend his services to anyone, and should we need assistance from a contractor in the future, he'll be the first person we call, as it's clear he can handle just about anything...

Popcorn ceilings

The Popcorn removal was excellent and a very clean process. They also transformed our stairs from boring oak to a much more modern look. They handled repainting of the whole house and replacement of old tile floors with a beautiful new one. There were many additional small tasks which they handled very well. They have design skills if you need them. The house looks great. Very talented and reliable people. I should also say they are very professional providing detailed quotations and billing. Stairs & railings

Max of Strataline Inc. did an exceptional job creating 1) a custom inside railing for a winding grand staircase and 2) installing outdoor railings. He even used a 3D printer to create a custom handle for an outdoor railing that had to be installed on a slight diagonal. Max is punctual, neat and very professional. We will be hiring him for additional projects.

FAQ

Stair refinishing FAQ

What stair refinishing services do you provide?

We sand, stain, refinish, repair, and paint stair components including treads, risers, stringers, handrails, posts, and related trim. We also coordinate carpet removal, squeak reduction, railing updates, and colour matching.

When can stairs be refinished instead of replaced?

Stairs can often be refinished when the existing treads are solid hardwood, thick enough to sand, structurally sound, and not too damaged by carpet staples, deep stains, pet damage, water, or previous sanding.

Can carpeted stairs be refinished?

Sometimes. After carpet removal, we inspect the wood underneath. Some carpeted stairs have good hardwood treads; others are construction-grade and need tread caps or replacement instead.

How much does stair refinishing cost?

Cost depends on tread count, landings, carpet removal, staple removal, stain change, railing work, riser painting, repairs, dust control, finish system, and whether stairs must stay usable during the project.

How long does stair refinishing take?

A typical staircase can take several days because sanding, stain approval, drying, finish coats, riser painting, and cleanup all need time. Dark stains and detailed railings can extend the schedule.

Can you match the stair stain to my floors?

Usually close. Matching depends on wood species, age, previous finish, floor colour, lighting, and wear. We prefer sample testing before final stain decisions.

Can stairs be stained darker?

Usually yes, if the wood accepts stain evenly after sanding. Very dark stains can show dust, scratches, and uneven sanding, so prep quality matters.

Can orange oak stairs be modernized?

Yes. Orange oak can often be sanded and restained, paired with white risers, black balusters, updated handrails, or refinished to better match modern floors.

Is stair refinishing dusty?

Sanding creates dust, but containment, extraction, protection, and cleanup reduce spread. Stairs connect floors, so dust control around halls and nearby rooms is important.

Will stair refinishing smell?

Some stains and finishes have odour. Product choice, ventilation, drying time, and household sensitivity should be discussed before work starts.

Can we walk on stairs during refinishing?

Access may be limited during sanding, staining, and finish coats. Sometimes work can be staged, but fresh finish needs protected drying and curing time.

What finish is best for stairs?

A durable floor-grade finish is best. Sheen, ambering, odour, dry time, traffic level, and maintenance expectations all affect the right choice.

Can you paint risers during refinishing?

Yes. Painted risers need filling, sanding, caulking where appropriate, primer, and durable paint. Riser work should be sequenced with tread staining and finish coats.

Can you refinish handrails too?

Yes. Handrails and posts can be sanded and stained or painted to coordinate with the treads. Detailed profiles and old coatings take extra time.

Can you fix damaged treads before refinishing?

Often. Dents, staple holes, cracks, chips, gaps, stains, and loose treads can be repaired to a point, but severe damage may make tread caps or replacement the better choice.

What should a stair refinishing quote include?

It should include tread count, landings, sanding, stain samples, finish coats, riser painting, railing work, repairs, carpet removal, protection, dust control, drying time, exclusions, and warranty.

Do you refinish stairs across the GTA?

Yes. We refinish stairs in Toronto, Vaughan, Woodbridge, Richmond Hill, Markham, North York, Mississauga, Oakville, Burlington, Pickering, Ajax, Whitby, Oshawa, and nearby GTA communities.
