Project overview

Two heritage staircases were restored instead of replaced

York General Hospital had acquired a Toronto heritage building more than 150 years old. Its two connected staircases, running from the basement to the second floor, had to be made functional, safe and visually cared for while retaining as much original material and character as practical.

This was a preservation-led restoration rather than a standard new staircase installation. Strataline coordinated the wood repairs, railing work and surrounding interior finishes through its stair refinishing and restoration service .

Preservation before replacement

The existing structure determined every restoration decision

Replacing the staircases with a completely new modern system would have defeated the purpose of preserving the historic building. The work began by distinguishing original components worth retaining from later additions and damage that required correction.

Original treads and posts were repaired where practical, and several original spindles were preserved. Later alterations were removed, sympathetic wood repairs were fabricated, and new safety and railing components were introduced without trying to erase the building's age.

Basement to second floor

Two connected staircases created one continuous restoration scope

The project covered two connected staircases extending from the basement through the main floor to the second floor. Each flight and landing had different wear patterns, surrounding conditions and railing relationships, but the completed work needed to read as one coherent heritage interior.

The narrow basement flight, main staircase, upper landing and second-floor approach were restored as related parts of the same system. The scope included treads, risers, stringers, posts, handrails, spindles, drywall, trim and painting.

Original tread condition

Adhesive, paint, plaster and construction residue obscured the historic wood

Years of use, vacancy and construction traffic left the original treads under layers and patches of carpet adhesive, old finish, paint, plaster and other construction residue. The surfaces looked severely compromised, but the underlying wood remained worth preserving.

Restoration required removing the contamination without treating every irregularity as a reason to discard the tread. Close inspection and progressive sanding revealed which areas could be refinished and which required more focused repair.

Festool dust-controlled sanding

A Festool ROTEX 150 removed difficult layers with connected dust extraction

The tread restoration used a Festool ROTEX 150 connected to Festool dust extractors. The system removed carpet-glue residue, old finish, paint, plaster and construction contamination while the extraction helped control sanding dust during the work.

This dust-controlled approach was especially useful across the irregular historic surfaces and confined stair flights. It reflects the same practical site-control principles used in Strataline's dust-controlled renovation work .

Progressive surface restoration

Stripping the treads exposed repairable wood one stage at a time

The first sanding passes did not produce an instantly finished surface. Residue density changed from tread to tread, and the restoration had to progress in controlled stages so the original wood could be assessed as it emerged.

The process photographs show the transition from coated and contaminated surfaces to exposed historic wood. Local scars and irregularities remained part of the existing staircase, while loose material and incompatible later finishes were removed.

Cracked original tread repairs

Horizontal dowels stabilized cracked treads so original wood could remain

Several original treads were cracked. Instead of automatically replacing them, specialized dowels were driven horizontally through each affected tread at intervals to stabilize the wood.

The dowels were cut flush after installation so the repaired tread could continue through the refinishing process. No unsupported dowel diameter, wood species or adhesive specification is assigned to the repair; the important point is that the historic tread was preserved rather than unnecessarily discarded.

Later alterations and custom wood repair

Red-oak inserts repaired square openings left by non-original spindle platforms

Later in the building's history, spindles had been mounted on raised platform-type pieces attached to the treads. Those platforms were not part of the original staircase and were removed, revealing square openings cut into the historic wood.

Generic filler would not have produced an appropriate repair. Thin custom red-oak inserts were fabricated to fit the openings, sit flush with the tread and follow the surrounding grain as closely as practical. The objective was a sympathetic repair to the original component, not replacement of the entire tread.

Original and new railing components

Preserved posts and selected spindles were integrated with a complementary new system

The restoration did not treat every railing component as equally historic. Original posts and several original spindles were retained, while later alterations and incomplete sections were addressed with new complementary railing components.

This distinction allowed the finished system to preserve authentic material without pretending that every spindle or railing piece was original. Existing handrail components were sanded and restored where practical before the new arrangement was completed.

New railing integration

Stainless-steel brackets supported a safer, complete railing arrangement

New railing components completed the system where preservation alone could not. The arrangement was installed with stainless-steel railing brackets and coordinated through Strataline's railing installation work .

The objective was a safer and more complete railing without visually overpowering the historic staircase. No railing species, bracket manufacturer, code measurements, guard height or certification is claimed beyond the documented project facts.

Drywall, painting and retained interior details

Surrounding finishes supported the staircase without becoming the main story

The wider scope included drywall installation and repairs, interior painting, repaired trim and painting to the risers, stringers, posts and existing trim. Window trim on the main floor was also repaired and painted.

The existing main-floor heating radiator was retained and remains visible in the finished heritage interior; the project does not claim that the radiator itself was restored. These surrounding elements help the two staircases read coherently within the hospital-owned property.

The lower flight retained its historic geometry while becoming functional and finished

These corresponding views follow the narrow basement stair from its heavily worn original condition to the completed restoration. The stair structure and proportions remain recognizable, while the treads, risers, stringers and handrails read as a cared-for part of the building again.

The pair is presented as a photographic comparison rather than an interactive overlay because the camera height and framing are close but not pixel-aligned.

The main staircase kept its original presence while later alterations were resolved

The main-stair comparison shows the change from a worn, incomplete railing arrangement to a finished system built around retained historic elements. Original posts and several original spindles remain part of the composition rather than being erased by a wholly new staircase.

Restored treads, painted risers and stringers, repaired surrounding finishes and complementary new railing components now read as one intentional heritage interior.

The result looks intentional and cared for without pretending to be new

The finished photographs show restored original wood treads, preserved posts and selected historic spindles working with complementary new railing, stainless-steel brackets, painted risers and stringers, repaired trim and completed landings.

The objective was never to make a more-than-150-year-old staircase look like a new-build system. It was to preserve useful historic material, correct damage and later alterations, and leave the two connected staircases appropriate to the age and character of the building.

The landings reveal how the staircase relates to the surrounding heritage architecture, including the retained window, exposed brick and curved original elements. New railing sections were shaped around these conditions rather than forcing the property into a standardized new-build layout.
