Stair tread caps are one of the best ways to turn outdated carpeted stairs into a clean hardwood staircase without rebuilding the structure.
If the staircase frame is solid, tread caps give you the look of a brand-new staircase without the cost and disruption of tearing everything out.
Oak treads, white risers, and updated railings create a brighter, cleaner, more upscale look that changes the whole entryway.
Installation is controlled, efficient, and well-suited to finished homes where full demolition would be excessive.

Carpet, staples, and debris are removed. The staircase is cleaned, leveled, and prepared so the new tread caps fit securely and cleanly.

Solid oak tread caps are installed over the existing staircase structure, creating the appearance of a fully rebuilt hardwood staircase.

Once the caps are in place, risers, skirt details, and transitions are completed so the staircase feels intentional, cohesive, and professionally finished.

Tread caps are often paired with black iron balusters, updated posts, or new handrails for a complete staircase transformation.

Tread caps are the ideal solution when you want to remove carpet from stairs and get the look of hardwood without rebuilding the entire staircase.

If the staircase structure is still sound but the visible surfaces are worn, dated, or inconsistent, tread caps give you a fresh finished surface.

Tread caps work especially well in homes moving toward white risers, natural oak, darker stains, and black iron railing systems.
Best for straight or simpler stair layouts with standard installation requirements.
Includes more complex stairs, turns, landings, and larger visual transformation scope.
Best for homeowners doing the staircase properly in one stage with tread, riser, and railing improvements together.

Your stairs are carpeted, heavily worn, or visually outdated, and you want the look of a brand-new hardwood staircase without full replacement.

Your staircase is already hardwood and in good enough condition to sand, stain, and restore rather than cover with new tread caps.

Stairs & railings
We had an excellent experience working with Maxim and Strataline Inc. Installing and perfectly matching a custom stain for our oak treads was no small task, and the addition of the square posts made it an even greater technical challenge—but everything was executed flawlessly. From staining to the installation of the railings, the craftsmanship and attention to detail were truly top-tier. The stairs and railings have become a standout feature in our home, and we constantly get compliments on them. What really stood out was the clean process—using low VOC finishes and a dust-free approach made a huge difference compared to typical construction projects. Highly recommend Maxim and his team to anyone looking for high-end results without the usual mess!

Stairs & railings
Max and his team at Strataline have done multiple home improvement projects for us, including stair refinishing, popcorn ceiling removal, new flooring and interior painting. From the start their team was professional and punctual. The stair refinishing completely transformed the look of our home. The popcorn ceiling removal was done cleanly and efficiently with great attention to minimize dust and mess. The team delivered on time and with no surprise budget increases. I would definitely recommend Max and his team at Strataline.

Popcorn ceilings
We initially contacted Max to remove the popcorn finish on our vaulted great room ceiling & to refinish/modernize our curved 'blonde-oak' finished stairway leading downstairs. Not only did he do an impeccable job making the ceiling look brand 'new', and with no detectable dust left anywhere, but he also re-located some potlights & installed new crown moulding that required meticulous precision due to several odd corner angles that other contactors insisted couldn't be done. It looked so good we ended up having our main hallway, front foyer, & sunroom ceilings re-done as well. The stairway & railing were re-finished in a darker oak stain that matched our dark hardwood flooring & the new modern metal spindles, and new trimwork have made it look better than ever & despite the hours of sanding off the old finish, there was no dust...!! In the end, we also had his team re-paint all of the above areas, which turned out perfectly as well... Our level of confidence with Max's professionalism & skilled expertise, not to mention being easy to deal with, is such that we would recommend his services to anyone, and should we need assistance from a contractor in the future, he'll be the first person we call, as it's clear he can handle just about anything...

Popcorn ceilings
The Popcorn removal was excellent and a very clean process. They also transformed our stairs from boring oak to a much more modern look. They handled repainting of the whole house and replacement of old tile floors with a beautiful new one. There were many additional small tasks which they handled very well. They have design skills if you need them. The house looks great. Very talented and reliable people. I should also say they are very professional providing detailed quotations and billing. Stairs & railings
Max of Strataline Inc. did an exceptional job creating 1) a custom inside railing for a winding grand staircase and 2) installing outdoor railings. He even used a 3D printer to create a custom handle for an outdoor railing that had to be installed on a slight diagonal. Max is punctual, neat and very professional. We will be hiring him for additional projects.
FAQ
Stair tread caps are hardwood overlays installed over existing stairs to create a new finished tread surface. They are often used to convert carpeted stairs or worn stairs to a hardwood look without rebuilding the staircase.
Tread caps are better when existing treads are carpet-grade, badly damaged, thin, patched, uneven, or not worth sanding. Refinishing is better when the original hardwood is sound and attractive.
Yes. After carpet removal, we inspect treads, nosing, staples, squeaks, risers, stringers, and railing details. Some stairs are ready for caps; others need repairs first.
They can be made from hardwood species such as oak or maple depending on the product and scope. The right species should match durability needs, stain goals, and nearby flooring.
Usually close, but exact matching depends on wood species, floor age, stain, sheen, lighting, and wear. Samples help set realistic expectations before finishing.
They can change finished tread height and nosing profile. Rise consistency, landing transitions, door clearances, and railing relationships should be reviewed before installation.
Yes, but open-sided stairs need return nosing, finished edges, and careful detailing. They cost more than closed stairs because more finished carpentry is visible.
Sometimes. Curved and pie-shaped stairs require more templating, cutting, fitting, and finish work than straight treads.
Often the risers are painted, refaced, or replaced so the finished staircase looks complete. White risers with stained caps are a common choice.
Often. Squeaks should be addressed before caps are installed where access allows. Some squeaks come from structure or stringers and may not be fully removable without more invasive work.
Yes. Railing replacement can be coordinated with tread caps so post locations, baluster holes, stain, and paint are handled cleanly.
Timing depends on tread count, landings, open sides, railing work, staining, painting, drying time, and repairs. A simple staircase can be much faster than a full custom stair rebuild.
Cost depends on tread count, landings, open sides, curved treads, wood species, stain, riser work, stringers, railing changes, carpet removal, repairs, and finish coats.
It should list tread count, landings, cap material, risers, stringers, nosing, open-side returns, stain, finish, railing impacts, repairs, protection, cleanup, exclusions, and timeline.
