Oak stair tread caps installation in Toronto with finished hardwood staircase.

Why choose stair tread caps?

Convert carpet stairs to hardwood

Stair tread caps are one of the best ways to turn outdated carpeted stairs into a clean hardwood staircase without rebuilding the structure.

Full visual transformation without full replacement

If the staircase frame is solid, tread caps give you the look of a brand-new staircase without the cost and disruption of tearing everything out.

Ideal for modernizing dated stairs

Oak treads, white risers, and updated railings create a brighter, cleaner, more upscale look that changes the whole entryway.

Faster and cleaner than rebuilding

Installation is controlled, efficient, and well-suited to finished homes where full demolition would be excessive.

How stair tread caps installation works

Preparing existing stairs before installing tread caps.

Existing stairs are prepared

Carpet, staples, and debris are removed. The staircase is cleaned, leveled, and prepared so the new tread caps fit securely and cleanly.

Risers, trims, and details are finished

Once the caps are in place, risers, skirt details, and transitions are completed so the staircase feels intentional, cohesive, and professionally finished.

Choose refinishing if

What our clients are saying

Popcorn ceilings

We initially contacted Max to remove the popcorn finish on our vaulted great room ceiling & to refinish/modernize our curved 'blonde-oak' finished stairway leading downstairs. Not only did he do an impeccable job making the ceiling look brand 'new', and with no detectable dust left anywhere, but he also re-located some potlights & installed new crown moulding that required meticulous precision due to several odd corner angles that other contactors insisted couldn't be done. It looked so good we ended up having our main hallway, front foyer, & sunroom ceilings re-done as well. The stairway & railing were re-finished in a darker oak stain that matched our dark hardwood flooring & the new modern metal spindles, and new trimwork have made it look better than ever & despite the hours of sanding off the old finish, there was no dust...!! In the end, we also had his team re-paint all of the above areas, which turned out perfectly as well... Our level of confidence with Max's professionalism & skilled expertise, not to mention being easy to deal with, is such that we would recommend his services to anyone, and should we need assistance from a contractor in the future, he'll be the first person we call, as it's clear he can handle just about anything...

Popcorn ceilings

The Popcorn removal was excellent and a very clean process. They also transformed our stairs from boring oak to a much more modern look. They handled repainting of the whole house and replacement of old tile floors with a beautiful new one. There were many additional small tasks which they handled very well. They have design skills if you need them. The house looks great. Very talented and reliable people. I should also say they are very professional providing detailed quotations and billing. Stairs & railings

Max of Strataline Inc. did an exceptional job creating 1) a custom inside railing for a winding grand staircase and 2) installing outdoor railings. He even used a 3D printer to create a custom handle for an outdoor railing that had to be installed on a slight diagonal. Max is punctual, neat and very professional. We will be hiring him for additional projects.

FAQ

Stair tread caps FAQ

What are stair tread caps?

Stair tread caps are hardwood overlays installed over existing stairs to create a new finished tread surface. They are often used to convert carpeted stairs or worn stairs to a hardwood look without rebuilding the staircase.

When are tread caps better than refinishing?

Tread caps are better when existing treads are carpet-grade, badly damaged, thin, patched, uneven, or not worth sanding. Refinishing is better when the original hardwood is sound and attractive.

Can carpeted stairs be capped with hardwood?

Yes. After carpet removal, we inspect treads, nosing, staples, squeaks, risers, stringers, and railing details. Some stairs are ready for caps; others need repairs first.

Are tread caps real hardwood?

They can be made from hardwood species such as oak or maple depending on the product and scope. The right species should match durability needs, stain goals, and nearby flooring.

Can tread caps match my hardwood floors?

Usually close, but exact matching depends on wood species, floor age, stain, sheen, lighting, and wear. Samples help set realistic expectations before finishing.

Do tread caps change stair height?

They can change finished tread height and nosing profile. Rise consistency, landing transitions, door clearances, and railing relationships should be reviewed before installation.

Can open-sided stairs use tread caps?

Yes, but open-sided stairs need return nosing, finished edges, and careful detailing. They cost more than closed stairs because more finished carpentry is visible.

Can curved stairs use tread caps?

Sometimes. Curved and pie-shaped stairs require more templating, cutting, fitting, and finish work than straight treads.

Do risers get replaced with tread caps?

Often the risers are painted, refaced, or replaced so the finished staircase looks complete. White risers with stained caps are a common choice.

Can squeaks be fixed before tread caps go on?

Often. Squeaks should be addressed before caps are installed where access allows. Some squeaks come from structure or stringers and may not be fully removable without more invasive work.

Can railings be replaced with tread caps?

Yes. Railing replacement can be coordinated with tread caps so post locations, baluster holes, stain, and paint are handled cleanly.

How long does tread cap installation take?

Timing depends on tread count, landings, open sides, railing work, staining, painting, drying time, and repairs. A simple staircase can be much faster than a full custom stair rebuild.

What affects tread cap cost?

Cost depends on tread count, landings, open sides, curved treads, wood species, stain, riser work, stringers, railing changes, carpet removal, repairs, and finish coats.

What should a tread cap quote include?

It should list tread count, landings, cap material, risers, stringers, nosing, open-side returns, stain, finish, railing impacts, repairs, protection, cleanup, exclusions, and timeline.

Do you install stair tread caps across the GTA?

Yes. We install stair tread caps in Toronto, Vaughan, Woodbridge, Richmond Hill, Markham, North York, Mississauga, Oakville, Burlington, Pickering, Ajax, Whitby, Oshawa, and nearby GTA communities.
