Before the first panel

The finish starts before the first panel.

Wallpaper follows the surface beneath it. Adhesive, torn drywall paper, texture, loose paint and uneven repairs are assessed before installation.

  1. 01

    Surface assessment and repair

Paint, drywall paper, old adhesive, cracks, ridges and texture are checked. Unstable finishes and uneven repairs are addressed before wallpaper is installed.

  2. 02

Skim coating, sanding and suitable primer

When required, damaged paper is sealed and the wall is skimmed, sanded or primed with a product suited to the wallcovering.

  3. 03

    Pattern, focal-point and seam layout

Reference lines, pattern position and seam placement are planned around corners, openings and important room features before cutting.

  4. 04

Careful trimming, cleanup and final review

Panels are trimmed around ceilings, baseboards, casing and fixtures. The room is cleaned and the complete installation is reviewed.

Materials and applications

Wallcoverings we install

Product instructions, adhesive choice, wall suitability and site conditions are reviewed before the installation approach is confirmed.

01

Non-woven and paste-the-wall wallpaper

Product instructions determine the adhesive, booking and wall preparation required.

02

Vinyl and textured wallcoverings

Weight, backing, surface relief and cleanability all affect handling and adhesive choice.

03

Grasscloth and natural-fibre wallcoverings

Natural shading, visible panel character and variation can be inherent to the material rather than an installation defect.

04

Multi-panel murals and panoramic designs

Panel order, wall dimensions, centring, trimming allowance and focal points are checked before installation.

05

Peel-and-stick and pre-pasted wallpaper

These products still need a smooth, sound and suitably cured surface; they are not automatically easier to align.

06

Select commercial wallcoverings

Product specifications, site access and the intended application are reviewed before the work is accepted.

A clear four-step process

From wall photos to final review

Photographs can support an initial estimate. Complex walls, removals, high areas or specialty materials may still require a site visit.

  1. 01

Send the walls and product information

Share room and wall photographs, approximate dimensions, ceiling height, the product link or label, and any visible damage or old wallpaper.

  2. 02

Review the material, condition and access

Strataline reviews the material, pattern repeat, wall condition, openings, access and whether a site visit is needed.

  3. 03

Protect, repair and lay out the room

Adjacent finishes are protected, approved preparation is completed and panel positions are planned before cutting.

  4. 04

    Install, trim and review

Panels are installed in the required sequence, trimmed around room details, cleaned and reviewed as a complete installation.

What affects the quote?

The wall, material and room shape all matter.

The scope is reviewed from actual conditions and product information—not a generic per-roll or square-foot rate.

Old wallpaper, adhesive, texture, torn drywall paper, loose paint, repairs, skim coating and primer.
Material, repeat and match type
Roll dimensions, repeat, match, panel order, natural fibres, murals and heavy or delicate products.
Room geometry and ceiling height
Corners, bulkheads, windows, doors, outlets, vanities, high ceilings and other fixed details.
Access and occupied spaces
Stairwells, difficult access, furniture, protection and the logistics of working in a finished home.
Feature wall or full room
The number of walls, rooms and connected spaces included in the requested scope.
Removal and wall recovery
Removing existing wallpaper and repairing, sealing or smoothing the wall found beneath it.

Removal and wall recovery

Old wallpaper rarely leaves a ready-to-paper wall.

Removal can uncover adhesive, torn drywall facing, stains, unstable paint and uneven repairs. The exposed wall is assessed before new wallpaper or paint is planned.

Wallpaper installation FAQ

Useful answers before the first panel.

Preparation, product information and room conditions determine the right installation plan.

Do walls need to be primed before wallpaper installation?

Often, yes. Wallpaper-compatible primer can seal porous repairs, create a more consistent surface, help with panel positioning and reduce damage during future removal. The correct preparation depends on the existing paint, drywall condition and product instructions. Damaged drywall paper may need sealing before any skim coat or primer is applied.

Can you install grasscloth and natural-fibre wallcoverings?

Strataline can review grasscloth and natural-fibre products for suitable projects. These materials need careful handling and a properly prepared wall. Shade changes, fibre variation and visible panel character may be inherent to the material. Send the product information first so the wallcovering, adhesive and site conditions can be reviewed.

Can you install multi-panel murals?

Yes, after the wall size, panel order and product instructions are checked. Layout is planned around the focal point, trimming allowance, corners, openings and other fixed details. The delivered panels should also be inspected before installation so printing, sequence or shipping issues are found early.

Can wallpaper be installed in bathrooms or powder rooms?

Yes, when the product and room conditions are suitable. Bathrooms need reliable ventilation, a sound prepared wall and a wallcovering appropriate for expected humidity and cleaning. Wallpaper should not be assumed suitable for direct splash or wet areas. The product instructions and likely moisture exposure are reviewed first.

Can wallpaper be installed over textured or damaged walls?

Usually not without correcting the surface first. Texture, torn drywall paper, ridges, dents, loose paint and uneven patches can show through the wallcovering or weaken adhesion. Preparation may include residue removal, sealing damaged paper, repairs, skim coating, sanding and suitable primer.

Do you remove old wallpaper?

Yes, when removal is part of the approved scope. New wallpaper is generally better installed after old paper and adhesive are removed and the exposed wall is assessed. Removal can reveal torn drywall facing, stains, previous repairs or texture that needs sealing, skimming or primer.

What photographs and measurements are needed for an estimate?

Send a full-room photograph, a straight-on photograph of each wall, approximate wall width and height, ceiling height, your city and the wallpaper product link or label. Include roll dimensions and pattern repeat when available, plus photographs of texture, damage, existing wallpaper or difficult access. Some projects may still require a site visit.

How should wallpaper quantity be calculated?

Use the exact wall widths and heights together with roll width, roll length and pattern repeat. A large repeat or drop match creates more waste because adjacent drops must align. Murals may use finished wall dimensions or a fixed panel set. Product-specific guidance should control the final order, with enough matching material for trimming and future repairs.

This is the second time Max has done some work at our home. The first time was to remove popcorn from our hallway ceilings. We were so very impressed with the results and it was truly dust-free.

We had an excellent experience working with Maxim and Strataline Inc. Installing and perfectly matching a custom stain for our oak treads was no small task, and the addition of the square posts made it an even greater technical challenge—but everything was executed flawlessly.
