Removal is only half the work
Adhesive is a finish-system problem
Glue left behind can cause paint to flash, crack or lose adhesion, and it can interfere with new wallpaper. Residue must be removed or stabilized as part of the approved wall-recovery scope.
Torn drywall paper needs sealing
If unprimed drywall facing lifts during removal, joint compound should not be applied directly over loose or exposed paper. Damaged areas are stabilized before patching or skim coating.
The next finish sets the standard
A wall being repainted may need a different repair and primer sequence than a wall receiving new wallpaper. We define the intended finish before deciding how far wall correction must go.
A controlled wallpaper-removal process
Review photos and inspect the room
Wide room views, close photographs of seams and damage, approximate wall dimensions, ceiling height and access details can support the first review. Uncertain walls may need a site visit or test area.
Protect floors, trim and nearby finishes
Floors, baseboards, casing, fixtures, cabinetry and adjoining rooms are protected for wet removal, scraping, debris and any sanding included in the work.
Separate the covering in workable layers
The release method is matched to the material and substrate. Peelable faces may come away first; coated or painted paper may need controlled scoring, moisture, heat or patient sectional removal.
Clean adhesive and stabilize the substrate
Residue, loose paint, torn drywall facing, open seams and unstable patches are addressed before new compound or primer is applied.
Skim, sand, prime and finish as scoped
Where required, repaired walls are skim coated, sanded with dust control, inspected under working light and primed for the agreed next finish. Painting or new wallpaper is listed separately when included.
Conditions we are prepared to uncover
Peelable and strippable wallpaper
Some wallcoverings release cleanly from a properly primed wall. Even then, the backing and adhesive still need to be checked before the surface is called ready.
Painted-over or sealed wallpaper
Paint can block moisture from reaching the adhesive and hide loose seams or multiple layers. Removal is often slower and the exposed wall may need more correction.
Multiple layers, borders and repairs
Older rooms can contain stacked paper, border adhesive, patched areas and different wall conditions within one room. The scope may change after the first layers are opened.
Wallpaper installed over unprimed drywall
Adhesive can bond directly to the drywall facing. Careful removal reduces avoidable damage, but a completely damage-free result cannot be promised when the original wall was not prepared correctly.
Plaster and older painted walls
Cracks, chalking paint, weak coatings and historic repairs may appear after removal. These conditions are assessed before a new finish system is selected.
Detailed rooms and difficult access
Stairwells, powder rooms, vanities, cabinets, bulkheads, high walls, outlets and dense trim increase protection, cutting and cleanup time.
Choose the finished surface, not just removal
Smooth walls ready for paint
When the goal is paint, the scope can include adhesive cleanup, sealing torn paper, repairs, skim coating, dust-controlled sanding, primer and the selected wall coating. The written estimate should say exactly where the finish stops.
Walls prepared for new wallpaper
Replacement wallpaper needs a sound, smooth and consistently primed surface. Product instructions, wall condition and the new material determine the final preparation and primer.
What affects the quote and schedule
Wall area and room geometry
Total wall area, ceiling height, corners, windows, doors, cabinetry, fixtures, stairwells and access conditions all affect labour.
Wallpaper type and number of layers
Peelable paper, vinyl face stock, fabric backing, borders, murals, painted paper and multiple installations can require different removal methods and time.
Adhesive and original wall preparation
A properly primed wall may release cleanly. Wallpaper bonded to weak paint or bare drywall can require extensive sealing and surface correction.
Required finish after removal
Removal only, basic stabilization, paint-ready skim work, full priming, repainting and preparation for new wallpaper are different scopes and should not be priced as if they are the same.
Occupied-home protection
Furniture movement, dust barriers, daily cleanup, phased rooms and keeping parts of the home usable can add setup and coordination time.
Drying and return visits
Washing, sealing, compound, primer and finish coats need suitable drying time. A larger recovery scope may require multiple visits even when the removal itself moves quickly.

Removal and debris cleanup
Identify the walls and layers included, the protection plan and whether the price is fixed or subject to a documented test-area condition.
Adhesive cleanup and wall stabilization
State how residue, torn drywall paper, loose paint and failed previous repairs will be handled before skim work begins.
Skim coating, sanding and primer
Define the intended finish level, the areas being skimmed, dust-control expectations and the primer included after repairs.
Painting or replacement wallpaper
Final paint and new wallpaper installation should be listed clearly instead of being implied by the phrase “wallpaper removal.”

Wallpaper removal questions
How much does wallpaper removal cost in Toronto?
The price depends on wall area, ceiling height, paper type, number of layers, adhesive, original primer, access and the finish required afterward. Photos can support an initial review, but uncertain walls may need a test area or site visit before a fixed scope is responsible.
Can wallpaper be painted over instead of removed?
Sometimes, but it carries risk. Loose seams, trapped adhesive, texture and bubbles can telegraph through paint or release later. Removal and assessment of the exposed wall is usually the stronger long-term approach.
Can wallpaper be removed without damaging drywall?
Properly primed drywall can release very well. Wallpaper bonded directly to bare drywall or weak paint may lift the facing even with careful work. We minimize avoidable damage and price the required wall recovery honestly rather than promising an outcome the existing installation may not allow.
Does every wall need skim coating after removal?
No. A sound, smooth wall may need only adhesive cleanup, localized repair and suitable primer. Torn paper, ridges, widespread patches, texture or strong side light may justify partial or full skim coating.
Will the walls be ready to paint when the wallpaper is gone?
Only if paint-ready preparation is included in the scope. Removing paper does not automatically remove every trace of adhesive or correct damaged drywall. The estimate should state whether sealing, skim coating, sanding and primer are included.
Can you remove old wallpaper and install new wallpaper?
Yes. Strataline can review removal, wall correction, suitable primer and new wallpaper installation as one coordinated project. Send the new product information with the wall photographs when available.
Can you estimate wallpaper removal from photographs?
Photographs and measurements can support a preliminary range. Include full-room views, each wall straight on, close views of seams or damage, ceiling height, your city and anything known about the paper or previous installation. A test area may still be required.
How long does wallpaper removal take?
A straightforward feature wall and a full room with painted paper, multiple layers or wall repair are very different projects. The schedule also depends on drying time for cleaning, sealer, compound, primer and final finishes.
