How We Refinished an Etobicoke Staircase and Replaced the Railing

We refinished the treads and landings, finished the risers and stringers in white, and replaced the railing with dark square posts and handrails paired with white square balusters.

Original condition

Worn finishes around an open staircase

The Etobicoke staircase had dark treads and an all-wood railing, with visible wear and patching around the railing and stair edges. We refinished the existing flight and landings and replaced the railing.

Keeping dark treads, adding white

We kept a dark finish on the treads and handrails, with white risers, stringers and square balusters. The new square posts mark the foot of the flight and the turn at the upper landing.

Keeping the existing staircase

The original flight and landings stayed in place. We refinished their surfaces, including the treads and the white-painted boards along the stair edges.

Dark square posts and handrails frame the new white balusters. Replacing the railing while refinishing the stairs let us finish the wood and painted surfaces together.

At the top, the dark handrail turns around the square post and follows the landing. White balusters continue along the guard above the first descending steps.

Matching stairs to the surrounding floor

The stair treads and dark railing meet the existing floor at the upper landing.
