What was there before
Dark stair surfaces sat below an all-wood railing with worn or patchy components. The landing and adjoining wood floor also needed to relate to the finished stair.

The established stair flight and landing geometry remained. Refinishing the stairs and replacing the railing formed a connected scope.
Work completed
The treads and landings were refinished dark. Risers and stringers were finished white, and replacement square posts, a dark handrail and white square balusters completed the railing.
Planning the work
Post positions, handrail transitions and the upper guard were planned alongside the tread and floor colour. The flight and landing geometry remained while the visible surfaces and railing changed.
The result
White vertical elements separate the dark treads and handrail, giving the whole staircase a consistent finish from the lower flight to the landing.
