The curves were already there. Changing the relationship between the dark treads and white risers made them easier to see. This Kleinburg staircase carries that finish plan through several flights.

The curved staircase in this Kleinburg home went from honey-coloured wood to dark treads and white risers. The contrasting finish follows the stairs through the winders and up to the landing—the source of its “piano stairs” nickname.
Honey-toned wood covered the treads, risers, handrails and posts, with carpet at the upper landing. Similar colours blurred the step profile and curved railing lines.
We retained the recognizable curved geometry while changing the visible finishes throughout the staircase.
Dark horizontal treads, white risers and coordinated handrail, post and baluster finishes created the piano-key contrast. The upper landing received the same visual rhythm.
The tread edges, winders, curved rails and adjacent dark flooring needed to be considered together. In a related Kleinburg project, we fitted a handrail through a round column after the previous rail ended awkwardly against it.
Dark treads and white risers now follow the original curved staircase.

The previous railing ended awkwardly against the column. Careful cutting and fitting allowed the new handrail to appear continuous through the round column while new posts, round decorative balusters and hardwood tread caps completed the staircase.

The contrast comes from dark horizontal tread surfaces and white risers, carried into the railings and landing. The original curve remains recognizable; the finish plan makes each step and railing line more distinct.
The turn, winders, nosing and upper guard all need to be measured and included in the scope. Send a full view of each flight and a photograph from the landing; a simple tread count does not describe the curved transitions in this project.
