Engineered Maple Flooring & Stair Refinishing in Bolton

Dark engineered maple replaced the old parquet in this Bolton home. We refinished the staircase at the same time, fitted new square posts and changed the wood spindles to satin-black metal. The thicker flooring also meant raising the stair nosing so the new floor and staircase could meet properly.

Out with the old parquet

We removed the small-block parquet and installed dark engineered maple around the staircase. Festool dust extractors worked alongside the demolition equipment during removal.

The thicker floor changed the stair edge

The old parquet was 3/8 inch thick; the new engineered maple was 3/4 inch.

We raised the stair nosing—the finished edge around the stair opening—to meet the thicker floor.

Refinishing the staircase

We refinished the existing staircase and fitted new square posts. Satin-black metal balusters replaced the wooden spindles on the flight and landing.

Plain spindles with a decorative accent

Plain metal balusters alternate with double-knuckle, double-leaf accents. The decorative pieces share the same satin-black finish as the plain spindles.

Where the new floor meets the stairs

The wider view brings the work together: engineered maple around the opening, dark refinished treads, white risers and the new railing. The raised nosing meets the new floor height.

What homeowners can learn from this project

What flooring replaced the parquet?

We installed dark engineered maple. The new flooring was 3/4 inch thick, compared with the 3/8-inch parquet that was removed.

Why did the stair nosing need to be raised?

The replacement flooring was thicker than the old parquet. We raised the nosing to accommodate the new floor height and finish the connection at the stair opening.

Was the staircase replaced or capped?

Neither. The existing staircase was refinished, while the posts and spindles were replaced. The nosing was also raised as part of coordinating the staircase with the new flooring.

What balusters were used?

The new railing combines plain metal balusters with double-knuckle, double-leaf decorative balusters, all in satin black. New square posts completed the update.

How was dust controlled during the flooring demolition?

We used Festool dust extractors alongside the demolition equipment while removing the parquet.
