PROJECT STORY · DOOR INSTALLATION · AURORA
Converting a Bedroom Window to a Pool-Deck Door in Aurora
This Aurora bedroom overlooked the backyard pool but had no direct way outside. We enlarged the window opening, installed a full-height glazed patio door and finished the transition to the existing wood deck.

The missing connection
Direct bedroom access to the pool deck
The bedroom already overlooked a large wood deck and backyard pool, but the window provided only a view. Reaching the deck still meant walking through the rest of the house.
The homeowner wanted a direct route outside, so we converted the window location into a full-height glazed patio-door opening.
Starting with an existing window
Planning a full-height exterior opening
The new doorway needed to reach the deck from the bedroom floor. Enlarging the opening meant finishing the lower wall, sill and trim on both sides.
Opening the wall for the new door
Creating and finishing the opening
Finishing the new opening in brick
We finished the enlarged opening with a white frame and trim against the existing brick. The full-height glazing reaches down to the deck.
Before and after from the deck
Door and threshold integration
Connecting the sill to the existing deck
The door sill meets the existing wood deck just outside the bedroom. Inside, the trim meets the wood floor at the new opening.
Interior finishing
Finishing the opening inside
The bedroom now opens directly onto the pool deck. Full-height glass keeps the view outside when the door is closed.
Before, the bedroom ended at a window; after, the full-height glazed door opens directly onto the deck.
A new route outside
Connecting the bedroom to the backyard
From the deck, the white door frame sits within the existing brick wall beside the seating area.
Finished result
Straight out to the deck
The bedroom, deck and pool were already there. The new door connects them directly.
Homeowner planning
Planning a window-to-door conversion
Before ordering a door for a similar conversion, have the wall construction, opening size, threshold and landing checked. Building requirements and weather protection need to be addressed as part of the installation.
