Connected renovation

Opening the stairwell

A solid half wall enclosed one side of this Oakville staircase. We replaced it with an open railing, removed popcorn ceilings and installed hardwood, tile and trim in the adjoining rooms.

Stair opening

From half wall to open railing

Removing the half wall opened the view across the staircase. The new railing mirrors the one on the opposite side, including its finish and decorative metalwork.

After
The solid half wall was removed and replaced with a coordinated open railing that connects the two levels visually.

Railing design

Matching the existing railing

We fitted the new posts and balusters to the curved opening, matching the proportions of the existing railing across the stairs. At the landing, the railing meets the new hardwood and tile.

Ceiling renewal

Smooth ceilings throughout the house

We removed the popcorn texture, corrected the exposed ceilings and prepared them for painting. Containment and source extraction helped control dust during the work.

Work at height

Working on a 20-foot ceiling

The living-room ceiling reaches roughly 20 feet. Scaffolding provided access for removal and finishing around the chandelier and pot lights.

High-ceiling removal and finished result

Flooring coordination

A flush hardwood-to-tile transition

Hardwood and tile meet at the landing without a raised divider. We aligned their finished heights before completing the joint.

Finish carpentry

Finishing the edges

New baseboard follows the wall around the altered stair opening. Its returns finish the corners above the hardwood.

Finished result

The finished stair opening

The open railing reveals more of the staircase from the upper floor. Hardwood and tile meet at the landing, while the tall ceiling is smooth around the existing chandelier.

Staircase transformation

Homeowner takeaway

Planning the adjoining work

A railing change can also affect the edge of the floor and nearby trim. Settle those details, and the access needed for high ceilings, before installing the finishes.
